A Visit That Calmed His Heart

What was the hardest personal goal you’ve set for yourself?

The hardest goal I ever set for myself was to visit my father at home. It sounds simple, yet it took me so long to gather the courage and stillness to do it. Four days ago, I finally went.

When I arrived, the nurse was checking his blood pressure. It was high—159. My heart sank. He looked distant, lost somewhere between the walls of memory and silence. Later that evening, the nurse said his BP had gone down to 129. My sister asked me, almost in disbelief, why it had dropped so suddenly.

I told her I had sat beside him, gave him his favorite drink, and read aloud one of my blog posts—the same words I had once written to heal myself. Perhaps he felt that care through my voice. Perhaps his heart recognized love more than his mind could.

That day taught me something simple yet profound: love doesn’t always need perfect words or timing. It just needs presence.

I decided then to stop making excuses. To visit him often. To write stories about him—tales that will lift his spirit and remind him of the life he once lived so fully. Maybe, through these stories, he’ll find his way out of the fog of dementia and remember what joy feels like again.
