The Seeker asked, “Sage, what was your favorite quote growing up?”
The Sage smiled.”It was never a quote from a famous person. It was a sound.””The sound of a shuttlecock being struck across the court.”
In the late 1980s and throughout the 1990s, badminton was more than a sport in Malaysia—it was a celebration. Every time Misbun Sidek, Jalani Sidek, and the Sidek brothers appeared on live television, entire neighborhoods came alive. Families gathered around their televisions, cheering every rally as though they were inside the stadium.
When the broadcast ended, the excitement did not.Children rushed outdoors carrying their rackets. Streets, playgrounds, and open spaces became badminton courts. The laughter of friends mixed with the rhythm of shuttlecocks flying through the evening air. It did not matter whether the net was perfect or whether the lines were drawn.
What mattered was that everyone wanted to play.The heroes on television inspired an entire generation to move, dream, and believe that one day they, too, could wear the Malaysian jersey.
As the years passed into the 2000s, many of those legendary players retired. Life became busier. Children found new forms of entertainment indoors. The neighborhood courts slowly grew quiet.
The spirit that once united families in front of the television became harder to find.The Seeker asked, “Has badminton disappeared?”
The Sage replied, “No.
A sport only disappears when people stop passing its joy to the next generation. Every champion retires, but inspiration should never retire.”
The Seeker looked at the old racket hanging on the wall and understood. Memories are not meant to be stored away—they are meant to be lived again. Sometimes all it takes is one game, one child, and one shuttlecock to awaken an entire community.
