What’s a moment when you realized you were officially an adult?

The Moment I Became an Adult“You have a right to perform your prescribed duty, but you are not entitled to the fruits of action.” — Bhagavad Gita 2.47

I think I became officially an adult not when I reached a certain age, earned money, or learned how to live independently. I became an adult when I realized that my mind was my greatest responsibility.

As a child, I thought adulthood meant having all the answers. As I grew older, I discovered that adulthood was actually about learning how to live with questions without allowing the mind to control me.

There were moments when I wanted to blame people, circumstances, the past and even myself for the life I was living. But slowly I understood that I could not control everything that happened around me.

I could control how I responded. That was the turning point. My mind could create fear, anger, doubt and endless stories. It could also create courage, discipline, awareness and peace.

I began to understand that growing up was not about becoming harder; it was about becoming more conscious of my own thoughts. The adult in me finally appeared when I stopped asking,

“Why did this happen to me?” and started asking, “What am I going to do with my mind now?”That is when I realized that nobody else could live my life for me. I had to take responsibility for my thoughts, my actions, my choices and the direction of my life.

And perhaps that is what Krishna was pointing toward—not escaping life, but learning to act without becoming a prisoner of the mind.

“Therefore, with your mind steadfast in yoga, stand up and fight.” — Bhagavad Gita 2.38

For me, becoming an adult was not the day I grew older. It was the day I understood that I had to become the master of my mind rather than its servant.
