What’s a promise you made to yourself that you’ve actually kept?

“Let a person lift themselves by themselves; let them not degrade themselves. For the mind alone is the friend of the self, and the mind alone is the enemy of the self.”— Bhagavad Gita 6:5
The Seeker sat quietly before the Sage.”I made a promise to myself,” the Seeker began.
“No matter how long it takes, I will continue with my Isha practices and observe every change happening within me.”
The Sage listened without interruption.
“There was a time when my mind never stopped talking. Every moment was filled with endless chatter. Even when I completed a task, another thought would arise, telling me it was not enough. That constant noise left me restless and dissatisfied.”
The Sage remained silent.
“Today, that chatter has reduced tremendously. What remains is an emptiness—not emptiness of sadness, but spaciousness. When thoughts begin to crowd my mind again, I no longer fight them. I write. Every post I write helps unclutter another corner of my mind.
“The Sage smiled gently.
“I also discovered that a single negative thought, when mixed with emotion, could steal an entire day’s focus. Instead of becoming its prisoner, I return to my practices. Each kriya, each moment of awareness, brings back clarity.
Slowly, I regain my balance.”
The Sage nodded.
“I no longer seek dramatic transformations. I take baby steps. Every day is another experiment. I watch how the mind reacts, how it creates fear, resistance, and imagination.
I keep asking myself how the great yogis and sages understood this mysterious mind.”
The Sage replied softly,”They did not conquer the mind through force. They understood it through unwavering awareness.”
The Seeker continued,”I once believed special powers were needed. Now I realize the greatest power is willingness. Every time I replace unwillingness with willingness, another limitation falls away.”
The Sage’s eyes shone with warmth.
“As I became more focused, my work also improved. My income gradually grew. I no longer chase success. I simply continue the practice.
Everything I do is still a work in progress.”
The Seeker paused before adding,”There are still days when negative thoughts return and whisper that I should remain the same. Yet I refuse to stop.
I keep practicing because the peace I seek cannot be found outside me. Only by looking within can I truly know whether I have changed.”
The Sage finally spoke.”The greatest promise is not one made to the world. It is the promise made to your own consciousness—and kept every single day. Every sincere step towards awareness is already the path.
Continue walking. Let experience become your teacher, and let stillness become your guide.
“The Seeker bowed with gratitude.”I now understand. The mind is incredibly complex, but it is no longer my master.
Every day I become a better observer of it. That is the promise I have kept.”
“Abandon all limited identifications and take refuge in Me alone. I shall free you from all bondage. Do not grieve.”— Bhagavad Gita 18:66
